The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) holds a special place in the hearts of many Americans who grew up playing classic games like Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros. Forty years after its introduction, the NES continues to have a dedicated following, with Pennsylvania video game developers leading the charge in creating new games and cartridges for this iconic console, as well as other retro systems like the Sega Genesis.
James Deighan, co-founder of Pittsburgh’s Mega Cat Studios, explained that the nostalgia attached to the NES era is a significant driving force for developers. For many, it was the era that inspired them to pursue a career in the gaming industry. Additionally, retro video games have seen a resurgence in popularity, with #retrogaming videos garnering billions of views on platforms like TikTok and YouTube.
Esports talent agent Britt Rivera highlighted the appeal of old-school games in a world of constantly evolving technology. Retro games offer a sense of stability and simplicity that can be lacking in modern blockbuster titles with expansive narratives. Games like those developed by Mega Cat Studios provide a more „snackable“ experience while still offering a satisfying challenge for players.
Greg Caldwell of Retrotainment Games, another Pittsburgh-based developer, emphasized the unique appeal of cartridge-based games. While they may require more effort to produce, they offer a seamless gaming experience without loading times or downloads. However, playing these games may require older equipment like TVs and controllers, adding to the nostalgia factor.
Despite the challenges of developing retro games, both Mega Cat Studios and Retrotainment Games have found success in creating new titles for classic consoles. While cartridges remain a niche market, digital versions of these games are more scalable and accessible to a wider audience. The shift towards digital distribution has prompted developers to adapt and release their games on modern platforms like Xbox and smartphones.
Pennsylvania’s video game industry is growing, with 58 development companies spread across the state. The availability of Video Game Production Tax Credits has incentivized game developers to continue creating innovative content. Jesse Schell of Schell Games praised Pennsylvania’s talent pool and supportive environment for game development, citing the state’s low cost of living and abundance of colleges as key factors.
As technology continues to advance, retro games are expected to remain a beloved part of the gaming landscape. Caldwell expressed confidence in the enduring appeal of two-dimensional games with vintage aesthetics, noting that retro gaming has become a permanent fixture in the industry. With new releases and expanding teams, developers like Mega Cat Studios and Retrotainment Games are poised to continue delighting gamers with nostalgic experiences for years to come.
