The annual designer clothing fundraiser in support of Dunedin’s women and children in need is set to combine fashion and fundraising in a popular event organized by the Otepoti Dunedin Whānau Refuge fundraising committee. The event, which will be held tomorrow, aims to raise funds for the refuge, which provides safe housing, a helpline, educational programs, advocacy, and other services to help women escape abusive relationships.
One of the highlights of the event is the designer clothing donations from well-known brands such as Paris Georgia, Trelise Cooper, Thing Thing, Flo & Frankie, Annah Stretton, and Twenty-Seven Names. Committee co-leader Rebecca Bridgman expressed excitement about the event, describing it as a „super-fun event“ where everyone wins and is happy at the end of the day. Attendees can expect great bargains on beautiful designer clothing while supporting a worthy cause.
Last year, the committee raised nearly $67,000 for the refuge, setting a new record and surpassing the previous year’s total. The funds raised were used to purchase new beds, linen, duvets, and create a new „tamariki space“ in the safe houses, giving them a homely feel. This year, part of the funds will be used to make the refuge’s new offices a safe and welcoming space for visitors.
As a final-year student, Ms. Bridgman highlighted the importance of connecting students with the community and making a positive impact. She emphasized the need for community support for the Whānau Refuge and expressed gratitude for the generosity of the community in supporting their cause.
Co-leader Julia Newman shared her appreciation for the connections and stories shared by those supported by the committee. She emphasized the prevalence of domestic violence in the community and the importance of raising awareness about the different forms of abuse beyond physical or financial. The committee, originally a Law for Change initiative, has evolved into an independent committee focused on supporting the Ōtepoti-Dunedin Whānau Refuge.
About 65 students are involved in the committee, contributing to various events such as the designer sample sale, an auction, a quiz night, a bake sale, and a charity gig. Ms. Newman highlighted that these events are open to everyone, not just women, and encouraged all to offer support or get involved.
The designer clothing sample sale will take place at 343 George St from 10am to 3pm tomorrow, with a gold coin donation required for entry. Cash and eftpos will be accepted, but payWave will not be available. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own bags for shopping.
In conclusion, the annual designer clothing fundraiser is a great opportunity to support Dunedin’s women and children in need while enjoying some fabulous designer bargains. The event showcases the community’s generosity and commitment to making a positive impact on those facing domestic violence. By coming together to support the Whānau Refuge, attendees can contribute to creating a safer and more supportive environment for those in need.
