Featherston’s Transformation: From Meth Capital to Thriving Book Town in Wairarapa

Featherston, a once-ailing town in the North Island of New Zealand, has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years. From being overshadowed by more popular destinations, it has emerged as a thriving hub for book lovers, thanks to the efforts of its dedicated community members.

The town’s revival can be attributed to the establishment of Featherston Booktown, a concept inspired by the international book town movement. Spearheaded by local resident Lincoln Gould, the idea gained traction among the town’s residents, leading to the creation of a network of seven bookstores that now draw visitors from near and far.

One of the key figures behind Featherston Booktown is Peter Biggs, who serves as the chair of the Featherston Booktown Trust. He recalls the town’s struggles in the aftermath of economic reforms in the 1980s, which left Featherston grappling with declining school enrollments and vacant storefronts. The introduction of the book town concept breathed new life into the community, sparking a sense of excitement and rejuvenation among its residents.

Among the notable establishments in Featherston’s burgeoning book scene is Mr Feathers Den, owned by Sue Ryan. The shop offers a unique blend of second-hand books, quirky collectibles, and even a selection of new titles curated by Ryan herself. Nearby, Loco coffee and bookshop, run by Virginia Kunz, caters to a diverse range of literary tastes, from psychology to more unconventional offerings.

For younger readers, Chicken and Frog provides a whimsical setting for children’s books, complete with themed rooms and cozy reading nooks. Owner Joanna Ludbrook, a former school librarian, is passionate about promoting literacy among the town’s youth, despite facing challenges in a market where children’s books are often seen as a luxury.

Featherston’s rich military history is also reflected in Messines Military, New Zealand’s only dedicated military bookstore. Owner Dan Richardson curates a treasure trove of books related to conflicts and military history, attracting enthusiasts and researchers alike. However, the future of the store hangs in the balance due to rising commercial rents, highlighting the delicate balance between cultural preservation and economic viability.

As Featherston continues to evolve and grow, the success of its book town initiative serves as a testament to the power of community-driven revitalization efforts. While challenges remain, the town’s newfound identity as a literary destination underscores the importance of preserving cultural heritage in the face of economic pressures.
