If you find yourself constantly needing to rush to the bathroom after eating, you’re not alone. This common occurrence can be frustrating and inconvenient, but according to Dr. Joseph Salhab, there may be a simple explanation behind it. In a recent TikTok video, Dr. Salhab explained that the urge to go to the loo immediately after eating is often due to a phenomenon called the gastrocolic reflex, rather than a sign of a more serious issue like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Contrary to popular belief, food doesn’t simply pass through our bodies quickly after we eat. Instead, the process involves signals being sent to the brain. When we eat, the stretching of the stomach sends a signal to the brain that we are full of food. In response, the colon begins to contract to make more room for the food, leading to the urge to use the restroom. This reflex is particularly strong after breakfast in the morning, according to Dr. Salhab.

While each case may have different underlying causes, there are certain foods and drinks that can exacerbate this issue for everyone. Dr. Salhab warned against consuming fizzy and sugary drinks, alcohol, dairy products, fried and fatty foods, and some citrus fruits. These items can worsen symptoms and make the urge to use the restroom after eating even stronger.

For those who suffer from IBS, these bowel habits may be even more sensitive. Dr. Salhab recommended a low FODMAP diet, which is designed to help manage IBS symptoms. This diet involves avoiding a wide range of foods, including wheat, garlic, onions, legumes, dairy products, certain fruits, and high-fructose corn syrup, among others.

In conclusion, if you frequently find yourself needing to use the restroom immediately after eating, there may be a simple explanation behind it. Understanding the gastrocolic reflex and being mindful of the foods and drinks you consume can help alleviate this issue. While it may not indicate a serious underlying problem, making dietary changes and following a low FODMAP diet can help manage symptoms and improve your overall digestive health.
