Katie, a 19-year-old from Athboy, Co Meath, found herself at a crossroads after finishing secondary school. She had applied for a BA in Maynooth University but was unable to meet the entry requirements due to not having studied a third language in the Leaving Cert. Instead of settling for a business and law degree offer, she decided to take a year to figure out her true interests.
During this gap year, Katie enrolled in a one-year post-Leaving Cert (PLC) course at Dunboyne College of Further Education (DCFE) to study psychology and criminology. Her plan was to use her results from the course to apply for a reserved place in the BA program at Maynooth University. However, things took an unexpected turn when she discovered her passion for criminology and realized that psychology was not the right fit for her.
Ending the year with outstanding results, Katie confidently entered the BA program in September 2023, this time focusing on criminology, sociology, and law. She had a great first year, making new friends and immersing herself in her chosen subjects. Among her classmates was a student she had met during her time at DCFE, highlighting the importance of networking and building connections in the academic world.
As Katie progresses through her three-year BA program, she remains unsure about whether to take up an opportunity for an Erasmus year. However, she is crystal clear about her career goal – to work with children and young people in detention at Oberstown, the state campus for youth on sentence or remand from the courts.
Her decision to pursue this career path was influenced by a powerful experience during her work placement at Dunboyne, where she witnessed a heartbreaking court case involving a child being sent away. This experience ignited a passion within Katie to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable youth and their families, driving her towards a future dedicated to helping those in need.
Katie’s journey serves as a reminder that it’s okay not to have all the answers at a young age. Taking the time to explore different paths, discover one’s passions, and make informed decisions can lead to a fulfilling and purposeful academic and professional journey. As she continues to pursue her dreams, Katie’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, self-discovery, and following one’s true calling.
