The Oyo State Acting Governor, Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, recently inaugurated the Rule of Law Enforcement Authority in the state, emphasizing the commitment of the Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration to ensuring the safety and security of residents. This move comes after Governor Makinde signed into law the establishment of the Authority, which is tasked with coordinating and enforcing various laws and regulations related to health, environmental standards, asset management, road traffic safety, and maintenance.
In a statement released by Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the Special Adviser (Media) to the Oyo State Governor, the Acting Governor highlighted the importance of upholding the rule of law in society. He stated that a society where the rule of law is not well-entrenched is likely to experience chaos and instability. Therefore, the administration has prioritized law enforcement as part of its Roadmap for Sustainable Development, known as the Omituntun 2.0 Agenda.
The Acting Governor emphasized that the rule of law is essential for ensuring justice, transparency, and accountability in society. It serves as the foundation for trust, safety, and prosperity, and upholding it is crucial for protecting the rights of individuals and maintaining social order. He also stressed that effective law enforcement is not just about punishment but also about prevention, education, and community partnership.
To support the efforts of the Rule of Law Enforcement Authority, the administration has established the Oyo State Mobilisation Agency for Socio-Economic Development (OMASED), which is responsible for public orientation, sensitization, and advocacy on socio-economic issues and state laws. The Authority is expected to collaborate with OMASED and other government agencies to carry out its responsibilities effectively.
Members of the newly-inaugurated governing board include key officials such as the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Commissioner for Agriculture, and the Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority. The chairperson of the board, Justice Aderonke Aderemi (rtd), expressed the board’s readiness to enforce environmental sanitation laws, anti-grazing laws, traffic laws, and other regulations to ensure compliance and maintain order in the state.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by prominent figures such as the Chief Judge of Oyo State, the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, and other government officials. The presence of these dignitaries underscores the importance of the Rule of Law Enforcement Authority in upholding the rule of law and promoting a safe and secure environment for all residents.
In conclusion, the establishment of the Rule of Law Enforcement Authority in Oyo State reflects the administration’s commitment to promoting justice, transparency, and accountability. By enforcing laws and regulations effectively, the Authority aims to create a society where the rights of individuals are protected, social order is maintained, and opportunities for growth and development are fostered.
