Illini women’s basketball coach Shauna Green was recently honored as the 2024 Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts of Central Illinois. The recognition took place at the annual Diamonds, Desserts, and Distinction fundraiser held at the CityView Banquet & Meeting Center in Champaign. This prestigious award marks Green as the 148th woman to receive this honor in the program’s 32-year history.
Shauna Green has been at the helm of the Illinois women’s basketball team for the past three years, amassing a record of 41-25. Under her leadership, the team made a NCAA tournament appearance in 2023 and clinched the WBIT championship in 2024. Due to her outstanding performance, plans are now underway for Green to receive a contract extension. Her current deal, which was signed before the 2022-23 season, includes an annual salary of $880,000 starting on July 1, 2024. Notably, Green became the first coach of an Illinois women’s sports team to surpass $1 million in earnings in a single school year, achieved through regular compensation, bonuses for the WBIT berth and title, and a retention bonus.
In a recent interview, Green expressed her gratitude for the support and belief shown by Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman. She emphasized the importance of shared goals, vision, and trust between the coaching staff and administration. Green’s ultimate goal is to win, regardless of her location, and she appreciates the confidence and extension offered by the university.
Shauna Green’s success as a coach and her dedication to the Illinois women’s basketball program have not gone unnoticed. Her commitment to excellence and her drive to succeed have propelled the team to new heights, earning her the well-deserved title of Woman of Distinction. As she continues to lead the Illini to victory, Green’s impact on the women’s basketball community will undoubtedly be felt for years to come.
