The Society of Wilderness (SOW) has been actively promoting sustainable living through their Green Map initiative. In a recent workshop organized by SOW, Mika Shen, a volunteer and Taiwan Citizen Journalist, shared her experience in creating a Green Map for her community. The workshop aimed to engage individuals in sustainable conversations within organizations, communities, and personal lives.
The workshop spanned over 9 days and took participants to various locations rich in biodiversity, such as Wufen Port Creek and Shumeikeng Creek. These areas faced environmental challenges like dams, irrigation, and sewage discharge. Participants learned about the history of these locations, including the migration of Pingpu tribes and the development of irrigation systems during the Japanese colonial period.
Through the Green Map System, founded by Wendy Brawer in 1995, participants were introduced to 170 green icons representing positive and negative aspects of the environment. These icons helped connect people with the cultural, social, natural, and sustainable aspects of their surroundings. The workshop included activities like Green Map Taiwan Tour, Yongchunpi Ecological Wetland Park visit, and technology-based games to engage participants in creating their own Green Living Maps.
The Green Map System has expanded to 65 countries worldwide, with Wilderness Taipei collaborating to bring this initiative to Taiwan. Over the past 20 years, SOW has conducted instructor training workshops and promoted the concept in schools, organizations, and enterprises, leading to the creation of numerous Green Living Maps.
„Green living spots“ are locations that contribute to saving the Earth, such as eco-friendly restrooms and train stations with bike-friendly facilities and free Wi-Fi. These spots are marked on the Green Map to raise awareness and encourage sustainable practices. Drawing a Green Map may seem challenging, but with systematic organization, even elementary school students can create one. The process of mapping out green living spots fosters a deeper appreciation for the environment and inspires individuals to notice the beauty in their surroundings.
In conclusion, the Green Map initiative by SOW is a powerful tool for promoting sustainable living and environmental awareness. By creating Green Living Maps, individuals can actively contribute to saving the planet and appreciating the natural beauty around them. Join the movement and start drawing maps to save the Earth!
