Universities and colleges offer hundreds of short courses for working engineers. The Engineer has contacted 19 institutions to find out which courses are most popular. Most of these courses can be applied for through antagning.se, which opens on March 15th.
Many colleges that educate civil and industrial engineers also offer standalone courses aimed at working engineers looking for professional development.
The Engineer has asked all institutions that educate engineers to list the most popular standalone courses aimed at engineers from the previous year.
Out of 20 institutions, 19 have responded, and the compilation clearly shows that programming, cybersecurity, and AI are areas of interest for many, along with climate and sustainability.
More institutions have also developed online courses, known as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), where participants can study at their own pace. Some institutions also offer commissioned education and longer advanced education programs.
These standalone courses can be applied for through www.antagning.se. The application for autumn courses opens on March 15th and closes on April 15th.
Online courses and some other programs can be applied for through links on the institutions‘ websites. Many have compiled courses for working professionals on a specific page. We have gathered the links under each institution.
At the end of the article, there is information about two initiatives/projects where several institutions, together with the industry, have developed short web-based courses. These are Engineer 4.0, focused on the industry, and Open for Climate, which offers courses on climate change.
### KTH
KTH has made a significant investment in further education for working engineers and offers over 150 standalone courses every semester. Approximately one-third of these courses require no attendance, and some are flexible, allowing participants to study at any time of the day.

### Chalmers
In autumn 2024, Chalmers offers four standalone courses aimed at working engineers.
The three most popular courses from last year were:
– The big questions: about the building blocks of nature, the universe, life, and the future
– Renewable electricity production and electric transport
– Policymaking for climate and circular economy

### Uppsala University
During autumn 2024, Uppsala University offers around 50 standalone courses aimed at working engineers.
The three most popular courses from last year were:
– Information Technology – opportunities and challenges, 10 hp
– Wind power – basic course, 7.5 hp
– Computers and programming, 10 hp (summer course)
This year, Uppsala University has developed some new courses specifically aimed at working professionals in the technology field.
