He was my first introduction to the USA and politics.

Growing up, my first exposure to American politics was through my grandmother’s admiration for Ronald Reagan. She appreciated his strong presence and authoritative voice, but what truly resonated with her were the conversations he had with Gorbachev and the signing of the INF Treaty in 1987. This treaty led to the removal of nearly all land-based nuclear missiles on both sides, totaling 2,692. „Grandma’s Reagan“ became my initial reference point to the United States and politics.

As I delved deeper into American politics, I had the opportunity to meet Governor George S. Mickelson of South Dakota while attending college at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. Founded by Scandinavian immigrants in 1860, the college has maintained its Norwegian roots and evolved into a prestigious university with a focus on liberal arts education. My experience witnessing Governor Mickelson open a session with a prayer at the State Capitol left a lasting impression on me, highlighting the intertwining of religion and politics in American society.

The intersection of religion and politics is a complex and paradoxical aspect of American culture, with discussions often revolving around how one’s political beliefs are influenced by their religious affiliations. This dynamic is particularly evident among Norwegian-Americans in the Midwest, who predominantly lean towards conservatism and tend to vote Republican. The question arises: is this tendency rooted in their Norwegian heritage, or is it a product of their assimilation into American society?

The history of Norwegian immigration to America, which began in 1825 with the voyage of the ship „Restauration,“ laid the foundation for a significant Norwegian-American population with strong ties to their cultural heritage. Over the years, the descendants of these immigrants have maintained a connection to their Norwegian roots, often manifesting in conservative political leanings and a focus on traditional values.

Professor Mike Nitz of Augustana University sheds light on the role of faith and religion in shaping the political beliefs of Norwegian-Americans. The divide between churches that emphasize the moral aspects of Christianity and those that prioritize social ethics reflects the broader spectrum of political ideologies within the community.

In contemporary American society, Lutheran churches, particularly those affiliated with ELCA, play a significant role in shaping the political landscape for Norwegian-Americans. While some advocate for a return to Christian values and biblical principles in governance, others champion progressive causes such as LGBTQ rights, reproductive rights, and social justice.

The upcoming 200th anniversary of Norwegian immigration to America in 2025 serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring influence of Norwegian heritage on American politics. As the descendants of Norwegian immigrants navigate their dual identities, the intricate interplay between faith, culture, and politics continues to shape their worldview and voting preferences.

As the political landscape evolves, the puzzle of Norwegian-American conservatism remains multifaceted, reflecting a blend of ancestral traditions, religious beliefs, and contemporary societal influences. With the upcoming election on November 5th, the alignment of these diverse elements will determine the political choices of Norwegian-Americans and shed light on the enduring legacy of their heritage in American politics.

Jorunn Raddum, a theologian and organist with a deep understanding of both Norwegian and American cultures, offers a unique perspective on the intricate relationship between faith, heritage, and politics among Norwegian-Americans in the Midwest. Her insights provide valuable context for understanding the complexities of identity and ideology within this vibrant community.
