The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has announced plans to purchase an additional 41 bi-level commuter rail cars from Hyundai Rotem, a renowned manufacturer of railway vehicles. This decision comes as part of a larger agreement made in 2019, which included the provision of 83 cars to MBTA. The move aims to replace the aging fleet and enhance the overall commuting experience for passengers.
MBTA CEO and General Manager Phillip Eng expressed his enthusiasm for the investment in new rolling stock, stating that it will not only improve service levels but also provide passengers with a more comfortable and reliable journey. He commended Hyundai Rotem for their commitment to delivering quality cars and acknowledged the efforts of MBTA managers overseeing the production and quality assurance testing.
Hyundai Rotem CEO Yong Bae Lee emphasized the company’s dedication to excellence and customer satisfaction. He highlighted Hyundai Rotem’s track record of collaborating with local transportation authorities and expressed their commitment to participating in the U.S. Rolling Stock Market.
The new commuter rail cars boast a range of features aimed at enhancing comfort and accessibility for passengers. These include increased spacious seating for up to 179 passengers per car, designated areas for passengers with disabilities, real-time information systems with automated announcements, improved accessible restrooms, USB ports at passenger tables, warm-white LED lighting, and bicycle racks.
In terms of safety features, the new cars are equipped with defibrillators on control commuter rail cars, emergency intercom units, anti-slip paint in vestibules, and updated signage including Braille. These features are designed to ensure the safety and well-being of passengers during their commute.
MBTA Executive Director of Commuter Rail Michael Muller highlighted the importance of meeting the increasing demand for commuter rail services post-pandemic. He expressed confidence that the new commuter rail cars will help the agency accommodate growing ridership while providing passengers with the convenience they deserve.
To date, MBTA has taken delivery of 76 new bi-level commuter rail coaches, with 64 already in passenger service. The remaining coaches are undergoing final testing and are expected to enter service by the end of 2024. The procurement contract with Hyundai Rotem was valued at $305 million.
The decision to invest in new commuter rail cars was driven by the MBTA’s Capital Needs Assessment, which estimated $24.5 billion for necessary repairs and replacements across the system. Rolling stock accounted for $2.4 billion of this total, underscoring the importance of upgrading and modernizing the fleet to meet the needs of passengers and ensure a reliable and efficient commuter rail service.
