Crime rates can fluctuate in cities, with some experiencing a decrease in certain types of crimes while others see an increase. Rochester, for example, has seen a significant drop in auto thefts compared to the previous year. However, the numbers remain high in comparison to similar municipalities. According to the Council on Criminal Justice, nearly 1,000 cars were stolen in Rochester by the end of July. While this represents a decrease from the year before, the problem persists.
Similarly, Buffalo has also seen a decline in auto thefts. However, the issue appears to be growing in Syracuse. Authorities in Onondaga County reported that 77 vehicles were stolen in just one week. Onondaga County Sheriff Toby Shelley expressed concern over the rising number of stolen vehicles, noting that most of the thefts are committed by juveniles. These young offenders often use the stolen vehicles to commit other crimes, such as burglaries, before abandoning the vehicles nearby.
Sheriff Shelley highlighted the impact of recent legislative changes on addressing juvenile crime. He mentioned that measures like Raise the Age and bail reform have resulted in fewer consequences for juvenile offenders. In the past, juveniles would have been incarcerated for such crimes, but now they are often released without facing significant repercussions.
To combat auto thefts, law enforcement agencies are increasingly relying on technology such as Ring cameras and doorbells. These devices provide valuable footage that can help in identifying and locating stolen vehicles. Sheriff Shelley emphasized the importance of community cooperation in preventing and solving crimes. Residents are encouraged to secure their vehicles by locking them and avoiding leaving valuables inside.
In addition to traditional theft methods, thieves have been using technology to steal vehicles. Valerie Puma, a communications specialist for AAA, explained how thieves are hacking into key fobs to gain access to vehicles. By using portable amplifiers to boost the signal of the fob, thieves can enter and steal from vehicles easily. Puma advised motorists to keep their key fobs as far away from their vehicles as possible. She suggested storing the key fob in a metal container or using a signal-interrupting bag, similar to those used for toll transponders.
As crime rates continue to fluctuate in cities like Rochester, Buffalo, and Syracuse, it is essential for residents to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to protect themselves and their property. By working together with law enforcement and utilizing technology and security measures, communities can help deter crime and ensure the safety of their neighborhoods.
