The India Society of Worcester is gearing up for its annual India Day celebration, set to take place on August 10 at the DCU Center in Worcester. This year’s theme, „Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — One World One Family,“ highlights the unifying concept of one world, one family that is deeply rooted in Indian culture. Balki Chandrakasan, secretary of the India Society of Worcester, explains that the phrase signifies inclusivity and invites everyone to come together and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of India.
India Day holds special significance as it coincides with August 15, 1947, the day when India gained independence from British rule. The event is a tribute to this historic milestone and serves as a platform to showcase the diverse traditions and customs of India. The India Society of Worcester, a volunteer nonprofit organization established in 1963, has been instrumental in organizing this annual celebration, which has grown in scale and popularity over the years.
Last year’s India Day drew nearly 3,000 attendees and featured a wide array of cultural performances, music, dance, art exhibitions, and activities for children and youth. This year’s event promises to be even bigger, with the addition of a business expo and job fair, offering opportunities for networking and career development. The highlight of the day remains the delectable Indian cuisine offered by over 40 vendors, attracting people of all backgrounds to indulge in the flavors of India.
The Indian community in Greater Worcester has seen significant growth since the establishment of the India Society of Worcester. Many Indian immigrants, particularly professionals in fields like technology and medicine, have made their home in the area, contributing to the vibrant cultural tapestry of the region. The India Center, located at 152 Main St. in Shrewsbury, serves as a hub for community activities, including health screenings, cultural and language classes, senior programs, and social events.
In addition to India Day, the India Society of Worcester actively participates in community events and collaborations, such as the Diwali Fall Community Day with the Worcester Art Museum. Through initiatives like the Health Stop program and Women Empowering Women group, the society aims to support and empower individuals from all walks of life. The overarching goal of events like India Day and the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam is to foster unity and inclusivity, bringing people together in the spirit of one world, one family.
