Indiana officials implement significant changes to new high school diploma program, gaining increased support from higher education • Indiana Capital Chronicle

The Indiana Department of Education recently announced significant changes to a proposed high school diploma overhaul, addressing concerns raised by teachers, parents, and students. The new plan includes offering just one baseline diploma for all graduates, a departure from earlier proposals that would have excluded certain course requirements like history, foreign language, and fine arts. This move comes after criticism from multiple Indiana colleges and universities, warning that the previous proposals would not meet admission requirements.

During the State Board of Education’s monthly meeting, the new diploma model was discussed and received support from various educational institutions, including Ball State, Indiana, Indiana State, Purdue universities, and Ivy Tech Community College. The changes have been well-received by some parents and educators who appreciate the shift away from the previous „GPS Diploma“ and „GPS Diploma Plus.“

Under the updated draft, students can earn „readiness seals“ for enrollment, employment, or enlistment based on their future path in higher education, the workforce, or military service. Each readiness category offers two possible seals – honors and honors plus. The baseline diploma requires 42 credits, slightly more than the current Core 40 diploma, with the option for students to earn additional credits to meet seal requirements.

The new diploma plan also allows for flexibility in course selection, with students having the opportunity to earn multiple seals if they choose. The inclusion of work-based learning and apprenticeships as pathways to achieving seals provides students with practical experience and skills relevant to their chosen career paths.

While the changes have been generally well-received, some hesitancies remain. Algebra II and economics would become optional under the new plan, a decision influenced by input from Hoosier employers. However, a personal finance requirement will be added to the baseline diploma to ensure students have essential financial literacy skills.

In terms of social studies, the proposed diploma includes a two-credit requirement for world perspectives, which can be fulfilled through advanced world language or a world-focused social studies course. The emphasis on world perspectives aims to provide students with a broader understanding of global issues and cultures.

Moving forward, the diploma plan will undergo a 30-day comment period before final adoption by the State Board of Education. Schools may choose to implement the new diplomas as early as the 2025-26 academic year, with the requirements taking effect for the Class of 2029. The focus on flexibility and personalized pathways in the new plan aims to better prepare students for success in college, careers, and public service.

Overall, the Indiana Department of Education’s revised high school diploma plan represents a collaborative effort to address concerns and provide students with a more comprehensive and adaptable educational experience. By incorporating readiness seals, work-based learning opportunities, and a focus on essential skills, the new diploma model aims to equip students with the tools they need to succeed in an ever-evolving world.
