By partnering with the prestigious Sotheby’s auction house, the museum is set to auction off 11 legendary automobiles from its collection. This strategic move aims to increase the museum’s endowment and ensure long-term financial sustainability.
According to Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Joe Hale, the funds generated from the auction will play a crucial role in supporting the museum’s operations and acquisitions. „If we can have that kind of funding in the bank, the interest income alone is going to allow us to buy new things for our collection, take care of our restoration staff, and take care of our cars,“ Hale explained. „It is going to guarantee the future of this museum for generations to come.“
Among the standout cars set to go under the hammer is the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 Streamliner, which is estimated to fetch between $50 million and $70 million. Additionally, the Le Mans-winning 1964 Ferrari 250 LM will also be up for auction, adding to the allure of the event.
The auction will take place across multiple sales late this year and into 2025, with a diverse lineup of iconic vehicles on offer. The list includes a range of historic cars such as the 1907 Itala, 1928 Bugatti Type 35B Grand Prix, and the 1981 Benneton B191 Formula 1 car. Hale emphasized that the decision to sell these cars was made after careful consideration, as they no longer align with the museum’s mission. „They have no connection to the 500, they never ran here,“ he noted. „There’s just no connection to our mission.“ The proceeds from the auction will enable the museum to focus on its core mission of preserving and showcasing the rich heritage of motorsports.
