Indie develops new chips for AI and autonomous vehicles, based on ARM technology

In the rapidly growing market of AI accelerators, several companies are stepping up to claim their share of the pie, aiming to reduce their dependence on industry leaders like Nvidia. One such company is Ola, an Indian firm known for producing electric motorcycles and scooters, with plans to introduce electric cars that can operate autonomously. Despite the challenges posed by India’s electric energy infrastructure and chaotic traffic conditions, Ola’s CEO, Bhavish Aggarwal, remains optimistic about the company’s future prospects.

Ola recently unveiled some new details about their upcoming AI chips for their krutrim and Ola vehicles. The Sarv-1 chip is expected to be based on ARM architecture, promising high performance, efficiency, and cost optimization. The processor is slated for release in 2026. Additionally, Ola is developing new chips called Ojas for Edge AI applications, which will be integrated into the next generation of Ola’s electric vehicles, as well as various augmented reality systems, mobile devices, and IoT devices. These chips are designed to offer best-in-class efficiency and feature a proprietary AI operating system.

In 2026, Ola plans to introduce its first Indian AI chip, Bodhi 1, primarily for AI inference and final stages of training, including large language models (LLM). The company is already looking ahead to Bodhi 2, which is touted as a world-class AI chip capable of supporting LLMs with up to 10 trillion parameters. With a focus on efficiency, scalability up to exascale computing, and a projected release in 2028, Bodhi 2 aims to set new standards in the AI industry. Ola intends to collaborate with leading chip manufacturers, such as TSMC, Samsung, or potentially Intel’s Foundry, to produce these cutting-edge chips.

Overall, Ola’s foray into the AI accelerator market signifies a significant step towards technological innovation and self-sufficiency. By developing advanced chips tailored for specific applications, Ola is positioning itself as a key player in the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence. With a clear vision for the future and a commitment to excellence, Ola is poised to make a lasting impact on the AI industry.
