Interesting Food Trivia in London

London is one of the most diverse cities in the world when it comes to cuisine. With a population of nearly nine million people and around 20 million visitors per year, the UK capital boasts a vast array of restaurants offering a wide range of culinary experiences. From traditional British dishes like fish and chips and Sunday roast to street foods from around the globe, London has something to suit every taste bud. While the city’s culinary landscape may seem modern, it is actually built on centuries of history and gastronomic innovations. Here, we delve into some lesser-known facts about London’s food history.

Pimm’s, a quintessential British summer drink, actually started as an accompaniment to oysters. Created by James Pimm in 1840 to be served alongside shellfish at his restaurants, Pimm’s No. 1 Cup quickly gained popularity and even received royal approval. Today, Pimm’s is synonymous with summer gatherings and is a refreshing drink enjoyed by many overlooking the River Thames.

In the 18th century, the Gin Act was introduced to regulate the consumption of gin in London. However, a clever loophole was exploited by Captain Dudley Bradstreet, who set up a gin vending machine disguised as a cat statue in Kennington. This allowed him to sell gin without being caught by the authorities, making a tidy profit in the process.

The scotch egg, a beloved British snack, was actually invented by Fortnum & Mason in 1738 as a convenient and delicious meal for travelers. Contrary to popular belief, the name „scotch“ in scotch egg has nothing to do with Scotland. It actually refers to the process of „scotching,“ which involved encasing eggs in forcemeat containing anchovies. Today, you can still enjoy a traditional scotch egg at select establishments in London.

Smoked salmon, often associated with Scotland, has deep roots in London’s East End. Jewish immigrants fleeing Eastern Europe in the late 19th century brought Baltic salmon to London, where they continued the tradition of smoking the fish. This led to the creation of London Cure smoked salmon, which is now a protected food product produced only in specific boroughs of London.

Rules restaurant in Covent Garden, established in 1798, is London’s oldest restaurant and still serves classic British dishes to this day. Borough Market, one of the city’s oldest food markets, has a history dating back to the 12th century and is now a popular destination for food lovers seeking artisanal products.

London Particular, a traditional British dish made with yellow split peas, is named after the thick fog that enveloped the city in the past. Le Gavroche, the UK’s first restaurant to receive three Michelin stars, revolutionized French cuisine in London and set the standard for fine dining in the city.

With over 75 Michelin-starred restaurants, London is a culinary powerhouse with a diverse range of dining options. From elegant takes on traditional cuisines to high-end fine dining experiences, the city offers something for every palate. Whether you’re craving a classic British meal or an innovative culinary creation, London’s food scene has it all.
