The 2024 Shanghai Book Fair kicked off at the Shanghai Exhibition Center, bringing together a diverse collection of foreign books from around the world. The event, which took place amidst the scorching summer heat of Shanghai, promised to be a literary spectacle for book lovers and enthusiasts alike.
One of the main attractions at the fair was the Shanghai Foreign Language Bookstore section, which showcased a wide range of modern novels, timeless classics, contemporary fiction, humanistic social sciences, and biographies. The bookstore also featured a special Harry Potter zone, complete with sets, art books, and themed merchandise. This year, the bookstore brought in more novels than in previous years, catering to the growing interest in different genres. Additionally, they offered unique tote bags featuring book cover designs, blending literature with fashion.
Another highlight of the fair was the arrival of Matsuzaka Shooku, a bookstore boasting a collection of Japanese books. With nearly a thousand titles on display, the bookstore offered everything from classic manga to the latest anime series. Popular titles like „Dragon Ball“ and „Slam Dunk“ lined the shelves, attracting both young anime fans and older readers nostalgic for their youth. The bookstore’s representative explained that this year, they focused on well-known classics to appeal to a broader audience, which seemed to resonate well with visitors like Zhang Jingxin, a 22-year-old college senior, who expressed her excitement at adding these books to her collection.
In addition to books, a variety of anime-related merchandise was also available at the fair. With the upcoming release of the movie „Detective Conan: The Million-dollar Pentagram,“ Conan-themed merchandise became a top seller, delighting fans like Mei Mei, a 29-year-old freelance writer, who found the selection of merchandise more impressive this year.
China National Publications Import and Export (Group) Co’s Shanghai branch and its retail brand BOOCUP showcased over a hundred original publications imported from countries like the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan. The exhibits focused on literature, arts, biographies, and children’s books, offering readers a wide array of choices. Collaborations with renowned publishers like Simon & Schuster and Highlights led to special thematic displays and exclusive merchandise launches, adding to the excitement of the fair.
Shanghai Hong Kong Joint Publishing Co highlighted Hong Kong-based Sino United Publishing (Holdings) Limited’s latest releases, showcasing over a hundred new titles in literature, social sciences, and arts. The store’s emphasis on its Hong Kong heritage provided a unique cultural perspective for visitors to explore.

The press planned to host 18 events, both online and offline, featuring cultural salons, international student performances, and interactive sessions like calligraphy demonstrations and song renditions.
