Introducing the Southern Living Idea House of 2024

For more than 35 years, Southern Living has been at the forefront of showcasing the best in Southern home design and lifestyle. Each year, they partner with builders, architects, and designers to create custom houses that embody the essence of Southern living while incorporating the latest trends in home design. This year, Southern Living is excited to announce that their Idea House is currently under construction in Kiawah River, a coastal community located just 20 miles from historic Charleston, South Carolina.

The design of this year’s Idea House is a nod to the simple beauty of the farmhouses that have long influenced the architectural style of the Lowcountry region. Situated between two majestic live oak trees on the banks of Abbapoola Creek, the main house and adjacent carriage house are thoughtfully positioned to take full advantage of the stunning natural surroundings. Every space in the house, down to the powder room, offers breathtaking views, and the floor plan is designed to seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living. The attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the design, with handcrafted products from local farm vendors and a curated collection of art from Charleston artists like Andrea Cayetano-Jefferson, whose sweetgrass baskets are a beloved tradition in the area.

To bring this vision to life, Southern Living has assembled a talented team of professionals who have a deep understanding of the Lowcountry region. The developers, Kiawah River, the builder, Dillard-Jones, the architect, MHK Architecture, the interior designer, Allison Elebash, and the landscape architect, DesignWorks, all call Charleston home and bring their unique perspectives to the project.

The 2024 Idea House is set to debut in the September 2024 issue of Southern Living and will be available for tours from August 23 through December 22, Thursday through Sunday. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the beauty and craftsmanship of the Idea House firsthand, soaking in the charm of the Lowcountry and gaining inspiration for their own homes.

In addition to the local team that is bringing the Idea House to life, Southern Living is proud to partner with national sponsors who share their commitment to quality and innovation in home design. These sponsors play a crucial role in making the Idea House a showcase of the best in Southern living, and their contributions help to elevate the project to new heights.

Overall, the 2024 Idea House in Kiawah River promises to be a celebration of Southern design, tradition, and innovation. With its stunning location, thoughtful design, and talented team of professionals, this year’s Idea House is sure to inspire and delight visitors for years to come.
