The Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (VTREC) of Malaysia Berhad has issued a warning regarding the vulnerability of certain keyless entry systems, which could potentially lead to vehicles being stolen within a mere 30 seconds. This council, comprised of stakeholders from the insurance industry, government, and non-government agencies, aims to address and combat the rising issue of vehicle theft in Malaysia.
According to VTREC coordinator Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, thieves have developed techniques to exploit keyless entry systems, resulting in a significant number of vehicle thefts. As of June 2023, a total of 1,924 vehicles were reported stolen, with cars accounting for 785 of these thefts. The Toyota Hilux, equipped with a keyless entry system, was identified as the most targeted vehicle due to its popularity and demand among thieves.
Assoc Prof Dr Law Teik Hua, the head of Universiti Putra Malaysia Road Safety Research Centre, shed light on the method used by thieves to bypass keyless entry systems in under a minute through „relay attacks.“ This tactic involves using radio wave amplifiers to capture signals from the key fob inside the owner’s home and transmit them to another device near the car, allowing the thieves to unlock the vehicle, start the engine, and drive off without physically possessing the key fob.
Dr. Law emphasized the ease with which car thieves can hack key fobs using handheld devices that operate remote keyless entry systems. These remote devices, capable of exploiting vulnerabilities in keyless entry systems, can be easily purchased online by individuals with malicious intent. In light of these security risks, Dr. Law stressed the importance of motorists taking proactive measures to secure their vehicles beyond relying solely on keyless entry systems.
He recommended the use of visual deterrents such as steering wheel locks and car alarms, which not only discourage thieves but also attract attention from bystanders or law enforcement officers. Additionally, he suggested keeping key fobs away from doors and windows, using Faraday pouches to block signals, installing mechanical locks, and employing tracking devices or car immobilizers to enhance vehicle security.
Dr. Law highlighted the need for enhanced security measures and proactive countermeasures from car manufacturers and law enforcement agencies to combat the rising trend of vehicle thefts involving keyless entry systems. He emphasized the importance of integrating advanced encryption technologies, improving the physical security of key fobs, and regularly updating vehicle software to address security vulnerabilities.
In conclusion, Dr. Law emphasized the importance of creating a multi-layered defense system against evolving theft methods, including motion sensors, remote deactivation, and strong encryption protocols. While keeping up with sophisticated theft methods poses challenges, joint efforts from the community and government are essential to enforce stricter vehicle security regulations and ensure the continued security of modern vehicles against theft.
