The company’s spokesperson acknowledged the issue and outlined the comprehensive actions Kia is taking to enhance the security of their vehicles and prevent criminals from using them for theft. These measures include providing free software security upgrades, distributing steering wheel locks at no cost to customers, and offering hardware modifications to reinforce the ignition system.
Kia’s efforts have shown positive results in cities like Chicago, Buffalo, and St. Louis, where reports of decreased vehicle thefts have been noted. The company continues to work closely with law enforcement agencies nationwide to combat car theft and address the role of social media in promoting criminal activities. Eligible Kia owners are encouraged to receive the software upgrade, which restricts the operation of the vehicle’s ignition system in case of a theft attempt without the key.
Additionally, Kia is providing steering wheel locks to owners of impacted vehicles that are not eligible for the software upgrade. These locks serve as a theft deterrent and enhance the security of the vehicles. Kia has distributed over 370,000 locks to date and will continue to provide them as needed. The company has also developed a hardware modification for vehicles not eligible for the software upgrade, reinforcing the ignition cylinder body to prevent theft.
