In the lead-up to the Kuala Kubu Baharu (KKB) by-election on May 11, certain leaders in the Indian community in Hulu Selangor have been cautioned against resorting to slander and spreading false information to secure votes. Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk R. Ramanan emphasized that such actions are detrimental to the long-term development of the Indian community.
Ramanan expressed his disappointment at witnessing leaders within the Indian community engaging in slanderous tactics. He highlighted that spreading inaccurate information not only hampers the community’s access to assistance but also undermines the credibility of government aid initiatives. By distorting facts through slander, these leaders are ultimately victimizing the very community they claim to represent.
Speaking at an engagement session with the Indian community organized by the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (MITRA), Ramanan stressed the importance of transparency and honesty in communication. He urged Indian leaders to provide clarity on government initiatives to shield the community from falling prey to misinformation spread by irresponsible parties.
Accompanying Ramanan at the engagement session were Sentosa assemblyman Dr. Gunaraj George and MITRA Special Committee chairman P. Prabakaran. Prabakaran echoed Ramanan’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for Indian leaders to engage with the community and dispel any false information that may be circulating.
Regarding the Malaysian Indian People Party (MIPP) being officially accepted into Perikatan Nasional (PN), Prabakaran, who is also Federal Territories PKR deputy chairman, dismissed it as a mere gimmick to attract support from the community. He emphasized that voters in KKB are discerning and seek representatives who are genuinely committed to serving all communities, rather than those who engage in political tactics.
The Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat became vacant following the passing of incumbent Lee Kee Hiong on March 21 due to cancer. The Election Commission has scheduled April 27 for nominations and May 7 for early voting.
