Kolkata Traffic Police has recently launched a special drive to ensure the safety of women in public transport by cracking down on vehicles with illegal tinted film on window glass. This initiative aims to prevent crimes from being committed inside vehicles with opaque windows that hinder visibility. As part of this campaign, at least four cars have been issued challans daily for using tinted glass, and three commercial vehicles, including mini buses and tourist coaches, have been asked to remove curtains from the windows.
According to the police, around 900 vehicles are prosecuted each year for using tinted films beyond the permissible limit. Since January 2018, a total of 7,645 challans have been issued against vehicles with illegal tinted glass. The enforcement of these regulations is crucial in maintaining transparency and accountability on the roads, ensuring the safety and security of all passengers.
„We usually fine vehicles with tinted glasses under three categories,“ explained a police officer. „The first category falls under Central Motor Vehicles Rules and Motor Vehicles Act, which mandates that front and rear windows must allow a minimum visibility of 70%, while side windows must allow 50% visibility. The second category involves the use of safety glass for windshields with a visual transmission of light not less than 70%. The third and most stringent category deals with the use of colored laminated films on windows and windshields.“
This crackdown on illegal tinted glass and curtains is a step towards creating a safer environment for women and all passengers using public transport in Kolkata. By enforcing these regulations, the Kolkata Traffic Police is sending a clear message that violations will not be tolerated, and strict action will be taken against offenders. It is essential for all vehicle owners to comply with these rules to ensure the safety and security of everyone on the road.
In addition to the recent drive against illegal tinted glass, the Kolkata Traffic Police has been actively working to address other road safety issues, such as illegal parking and hit-and-run incidents. Recent incidents, such as an auto-rickshaw driver setting his vehicle on fire after receiving a challan for wrong parking and three individuals being arrested for hitting a policeman with a vehicle during a check, highlight the importance of enforcing traffic regulations to prevent accidents and maintain order on the roads.
As the Kolkata Traffic Police continues to implement measures to enhance road safety and ensure the well-being of all commuters, it is crucial for vehicle owners to adhere to the rules and regulations set forth by the authorities. By promoting a culture of compliance and accountability, we can create a safer and more secure environment for everyone on the roads of Kolkata.
