The Irish Cancer Society Relay for Life Limerick is set to take place on September 7, 2024, at Croagh GAA Club in Co. Limerick. This 24-hour event brings together the community to celebrate cancer survivors and remember those who have lost their battle with cancer. Participants team up and take turns walking throughout the day and night, with entertainment and activities planned to keep spirits high.
One of the participants in this year’s Relay for Life Limerick is Nicola Hogan from Rathkeale, Co. Limerick. Nicola was inspired to get involved with the event after witnessing the challenges faced by her brother’s fiancé during her battle with cancer. Nicola saw firsthand the toll that a cancer diagnosis can take on both the individual and their loved ones, motivating her to support a cause that had touched her own life so profoundly.
The funds raised at Relay for Life Limerick go towards supporting vital services provided by The Irish Cancer Society. These services include funding groundbreaking cancer research, trials, and free support services for those affected by cancer throughout Ireland. For example, €30 can help provide transport for a patient to and from their chemotherapy treatment, while €60 can cover the cost of a counseling session to help someone cope with a cancer diagnosis.
In 2023, the support from the public enabled the Irish Cancer Society to provide over 510 free lifts for Limerick-based cancer patients, over 180 supportive conversations through the Support Line & Daffodil Centres, and over 625 nights of free Night Nursing care for patients in Limerick. The generosity of the community has made a significant impact on the lives of those affected by cancer in the area.
Relay for Life events are not just about fundraising; they are also about coming together as a community to show support, share stories, and provide encouragement to those facing cancer. The event is filled with entertainment, themed laps, activities, and uplifting moments that bring people together in solidarity.
Rosemary Simmons, Director of Fundraising and Marketing at the Irish Cancer Society, commended the people of Limerick for their enthusiastic support of Relay for Life. She highlighted the dedication and commitment shown by all those involved in the event and expressed gratitude for the generosity of the community in supporting vital cancer services and research.
