Market: House with Indian Well View Twice as Deep as Nelson’s Column

Nestled in the picturesque village of Stoke Row near Henley, a property known as The Grove is now on the market for the first time in nearly five decades. What makes this property truly unique is its stunning view overlooking The Maharaja’s Well, a historical landmark with a fascinating story behind it.

Constructed in 1864, The Maharaja’s Well was a generous gift from the Maharajah of Benares, who was inspired by his English friend Edward Anderdon Reade. Reade, who had served as the Lieutenant Governor of the North-West Provinces in India, had initiated the digging of wells in India to provide clean water. This noble gesture deeply impacted the Maharajah, prompting him to fund the construction of the well in Stoke Row, a village that had been facing water scarcity challenges.

The well itself is a remarkable feat of engineering, measuring 4 feet in diameter and dug mostly through chalk. It is deeper than the height of two Nelson’s Columns and took a year to complete, being opened on Queen Victoria’s birthday in 1864. In 1979-1983, the well underwent renovations carried out by builders M.C. Robins, whose family has owned The Grove since 1977 and still operates from its outbuildings/workshop.

The property at The Grove offers nearly 2,000 sq ft of internal accommodation, with the potential for extension and development subject to the necessary consents. The layout includes an entrance hall leading to a spacious L-shaped sitting room with sliding doors to the patio and garden. Additionally, there is a family room, kitchen overlooking the rear garden, dining room, pantry, utility room, and a large conservatory with a vaulted ceiling.

Upstairs, the first floor features a large principal bedroom with an en suite bathroom, two further double bedrooms, and a family bath/shower room. All bedrooms come equipped with built-in cupboards for added convenience.

Outside, the property boasts a well-pruned hedge providing security and privacy while still allowing for uninterrupted views of The Maharaja’s Well. The landscaped south-facing rear garden includes an extensive patio, lawned area, mature shrubs, and flower borders. There is also a building on the premises comprising an office, workshop, storage rooms, and a garden room overlooking the main house’s garden, ideal for further development or conversion.

Savills property agent Charlie Chavasse describes Stoke Row as one of his favorite villages, with its charming pubs and countryside walks right at your doorstep. The Grove presents discerning buyers with a rare opportunity to own a piece of history and enjoy the tranquil surroundings of this idyllic location. The guide price for this exceptional property is set at £1.2 million.

In conclusion, The Grove offers not just a beautiful home but a connection to a significant historical landmark that has stood the test of time. With its rich history, stunning views, and potential for further development, this property is truly a gem waiting to be discovered by its next fortunate owner.
