The Block-a-Chip Mentor Cruise-In is an annual event that car lovers look forward to each year. This year’s event, held at the Mentor Civic Center Complex on August 10, did not disappoint. The parking lots were filled with a variety of vehicles, from muscle cars to classic models over a century old to flashy new vehicles. Car owners, collectors, and families alike enjoyed the comfortable weather and the impressive display of cars.
One standout vehicle at the event was Linda Reho’s 1954 Packard Henney Junior Ambulance. Reho, the owner of Insurance Rescue, had never attended the car cruise before but decided to showcase her unique ambulance this year. The vehicle, complete with a working siren and all the amenities in the back, was a hit among spectators. Reho shared her journey of acquiring the ambulance from Minnesota after it was in a New York museum, highlighting the challenges she faced along the way. Despite the obstacles, she was thrilled to be a part of the event and appreciated the warm reception from fellow car enthusiasts.
Mentor City Councilman Scott Marn, a car enthusiast himself, emphasized the importance of the event in bringing the community together. With upwards of 800 vehicles and 2,500 spectators in attendance each year, the Mentor Cruise-In has become a popular staple in the city. Marn noted the excitement surrounding the event and the positive feedback received from residents, highlighting the strong sense of community among car lovers.
Another notable vehicle at the event was Tom and Gus Konitsky’s 1955 CJ5 military jeep. Tom, a firefighter, enjoys attending car shows with his son Gus and has been working on restoring the jeep to its authentic military specifications. Gus, dressed in military attire to match the era of the vehicle, added to the authenticity of the display. The father-son duo shared their appreciation for the military and the joy they find in working on their project together.
In addition to the impressive display of vehicles, the Mentor Cruise-In also featured some of the area’s favorite food trucks, including East Coast Custard, Just Wing’n It, Moose’s Tornado Potatoes, and Kettle Corn. Attendees were treated to a variety of delicious food options while enjoying the car show. WIXY-1260 was also on-site, taking requests and broadcasting live from the event.
Registered classic car owners received goodie bags, dash plaques, and a free ticket for door prizes, adding to the excitement of the event. With free admission and parking, the Mentor Cruise-In provided a fun and enjoyable experience for all who attended. Whether you’re a seasoned car enthusiast or just looking to enjoy a day out with family, the Mentor Cruise-In offers something for everyone to enjoy.
