In Indonesia, equitable access to high-quality internet and telecommunication networks remains a significant challenge, particularly in remote and underserved regions. According to a recent survey by APJII in 2024, over 57 million Indonesians are still without internet connectivity, with a notable gap in the 3T regions – the leading, outermost, and farthest areas of the country.
To address this issue, PT Dayamitra Telekomunikasi Tbk (Mitratel), the largest digital telecommunication infrastructure company in Indonesia, is taking proactive steps to enhance access to telecommunication networks across the nation, especially in Eastern Indonesia. With a vast network of over 38,000 towers and 37,000 KM of fiber optics, Mitratel is at the forefront of accelerating connectivity in the country.
One innovative solution that Mitratel is pursuing to improve telecommunications services is the Flying Tower System (FTS). This solar-powered unmanned aircraft technology utilizes High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) technology from Airbus subsidiary AALTO HAPS Ltd. Mitratel has recently entered into a strategic partnership with AALTO to develop the FTS, with the aim of expanding cellular operator coverage and connectivity.
During a Media Gathering in Labuan Bajo, Mitratel’s President Director, Theodorus Ardi Hartoko (Teddy), emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting the Indonesian government’s efforts to provide equal access to high-quality telecommunications for all citizens. Teddy highlighted the transformative impact of internet access on improving quality of life and driving economic growth in underserved regions.
Mitratel’s strategic focus on expanding its telecommunication network outside Java is evident in its ownership of 59% of towers located outside Java. This strategic approach aligns with the company’s goal of facilitating cellular operator expansion in regions beyond Java, where growth opportunities abound. The company’s performance in the first semester of 2024 reflects this growth trajectory, with revenue reaching IDR 4.45 trillion and net profit hitting IDR 1 trillion.
In line with its vision to become the leading Digital InfraCo in the APAC market, Mitratel continues to prioritize sustainable growth and innovation. The company’s Economic Sharing system, which offers a comprehensive telecommunications infrastructure solution for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), has contributed to a significant increase in service tenants and profitability.
Mitratel’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its efforts to reduce environmental impact, including the use of solar panels for BTS towers in off-grid locations to lower carbon emissions. These initiatives have led to an improvement in the company’s ESG Risk Rating and its inclusion in the LQ45 index, showcasing its dedication to environmental, social, and governance best practices.
In conclusion, Mitratel’s strategic partnerships, focus on expanding connectivity in underserved regions, and commitment to sustainability underscore its position as a key player in Indonesia’s telecommunication industry. By leveraging innovative technologies and fostering inclusive growth, Mitratel is paving the way for a more connected and sustainable future for all Indonesians.
