On 17 December, the world lost a dedicated colleague, Mohammed Hassouna, in a tragic Israeli air strike in Gaza. Mohammed Hassouna, 45 years old, was a valued member of the University College of Applied Sciences in Gaza (UCAS), where he served as the Director of the UCAS Incubator. This role allowed him to support entrepreneurs with innovative ideas by providing them with the necessary resources and guidance to turn their visions into successful businesses.
Hassouna was not only passionate about entrepreneurship but also deeply committed to enhancing technology in higher education. He continuously sought new ways to integrate digital tools into teaching practices to support student learning. His efforts were particularly crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he spearheaded the transition to online learning for UCAS staff and students through innovative teaching methods.
In addition to his work at UCAS, Hassouna was actively involved in the NORHEDII project E-Pal, a collaborative effort between UCAS, the Palestine Polytechnic University, the University of Oslo, and OsloMet. Within this project, he contributed to a research group focused on developing a digital tool to enhance English language learning, specifically in oral communication skills. His dedication to this project showcased his commitment to improving educational opportunities for students in Gaza.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mohammed Hassouna was remembered by his colleagues as a kind and supportive individual who always went above and beyond to help others. His untimely death not only impacted the project but also left a void in the local community where he was a valuable resource and friend to many.
Tragically, Mohammed Hassouna, his wife, and his oldest son were all victims of the Israeli air strike, leaving behind three orphaned children. Their deaths serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing violence and oppression faced by the people of Gaza at the hands of the Israeli occupation forces.
As we mourn the loss of Mohammed Hassouna, we remember him, his wife, and his son with deep respect and honor. May they rest in peace, and may their memory inspire us to continue fighting for justice and peace in their homeland. Our thoughts and prayers are with their children during this difficult time.
In closing, on behalf of the E-Pal project, Ola Azam, Mohammed Tamimi, Iyad Abualrub, and Hege Hermansen extend their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mohammed Hassouna. May his legacy live on through the work and impact he had on those around him.
