National Guard Member Saves Woman from Sinking Car in North Dakota

On July 29, U.S. Army 2nd Lt. David Hooge of the North Dakota National Guard demonstrated exceptional bravery and quick thinking when he rescued a woman from a sinking car near Devils Lake, North Dakota. Hooge, a member of the 231st Quartermaster Platoon, was driving south of Devils Lake when he noticed a car behind him swerving erratically before veering off the road and into the waters of Devils Lake. Without hesitation, Hooge pulled over and rushed to the woman’s aid.

As Hooge approached the sinking vehicle, he saw that the water was already up to the woman’s waist. Despite her panic and inability to unlock the car doors, Hooge remained calm and focused. The front door of the car was too damaged to open, so Hooge grabbed a rock and used it to break the back window. With the window shattered, he was able to unlock the door, allowing the woman to escape through the back door just moments before the car became completely submerged.

Reflecting on the incident, Hooge expressed gratitude for being able to help in a time of crisis. He emphasized that his decision to join the National Guard was driven by a desire to make a positive impact in his community and the world. Hooge’s heroic actions serve as a testament to his commitment to serving and protecting others, and he hopes to inspire others to do the same.

Hooge’s journey in the North Dakota National Guard began in April 2007 when he enlisted as a wheeled vehicle mechanic. Over the years, he served in various units before being commissioned through the Officer Candidate School program in September 2022. Currently, Hooge serves as the commander of the 231st Quartermaster Platoon, where he continues to demonstrate leadership and dedication to his fellow soldiers and community.

In recognition of his selfless act of heroism, Hooge has been awarded the Army Achievement Medal, the North Dakota State Commendation Ribbon, and three North Dakota National Guard Emergency Service Ribbons. His commanding officer, Command Sgt. Maj. Eric Binstock, praised Hooge for his quick thinking and willingness to put himself at risk to save another person’s life. Binstock highlighted that Hooge’s actions exemplify the highest standards of the National Guard and serve as an inspiration to all who serve alongside him.

In conclusion, the story of 2nd Lt. David Hooge’s rescue of a woman from a sinking car near Devils Lake is a powerful reminder of the courage and selflessness displayed by members of the military. Hooge’s actions not only saved a life but also exemplified the values of service, sacrifice, and dedication that define the National Guard. His story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, encouraging others to step up and make a difference in their communities and beyond.
