New Alker Distillery and Bar debuts on Oak Street | Culinary and Beverage | Gambit Weekly

Kevin Alker’s family has a long history in the spirits business, dating back to 1848 when they started a business making oak barrels in New Orleans. These barrels were shipped upriver to whiskey distillers and back to Europe. Fast forward to today, and Kevin Alker has taken a more direct role in the spirits industry by opening the Old Alker Distillery on Oak Street. The distillery produces a range of spirits including bourbon, vodka, gin, and liqueurs, with the distillery’s bar opening on August 2nd.

In an interview with Gambit, Kevin Alker shared how his interest in distilling began about six years ago when he started exploring the craft. After spending time at distilleries around the country and joining the American Distillers Institute, he decided to pursue his passion for spirits. Alker’s initial focus was on aged spirits like rum and whiskey, particularly bourbon. However, as he realized the importance of the front of the house in supporting the distillery, he expanded the product line to include vodka, gin, and liqueurs to cater to the bar’s needs.

The Old Alker Distillery offers a unique experience for guests, with Ryan Guillory crafting cocktails that highlight the distillery’s spirits. Guillory mentioned some of his favorite creations, such as the Cupid Shuffle, a dessert-style cocktail made with vodka, chocolate liqueur, raspberry oleo, and cream. The distillery also offers a gin and tonic with a twist, where the entire cocktail is carbonated for a more enjoyable experience. Other cocktails on the menu include classics like the old fashioned and a unique snowball cocktail called the Cane and Abel.

As the distillery continues to grow, Alker plans to offer tours and tastings through their website and eventually move into self-distribution, making them one of the first distillers in Louisiana to do so. Regional distribution is also on the horizon for Old Alker Distillery as they continue to expand their production levels.

Overall, Old Alker Distillery is a testament to Kevin Alker’s passion for spirits and his family’s legacy in the industry. With a focus on quality, craftsmanship, and innovation, the distillery offers a unique and exciting experience for spirits enthusiasts in New Orleans and beyond.
