Shrevewood Elementary School students will be welcomed back this fall with a variety of exciting changes and initiatives. One of the most notable changes is the appointment of Katie Vandawalker as the new principal, succeeding Joshua DeSmyter. Vandawalker, who previously served as the assistant principal, expressed her excitement about taking on this new role and leading the school into the future.
Having been a part of the Shrevewood community for the past three years, Vandawalker has developed a deep appreciation for the staff, families, and most importantly, the students. She highlighted the kindness and strong relationships that the students at Shrevewood possess, emphasizing the school’s focus on character strengths and building positive relationships through initiatives like the Positivity Project.
With approximately 540 students and 85 employees, including 26 classroom teachers, Shrevewood Elementary School is a vibrant and diverse community. Vandawalker praised the students for their acceptance of differences and their ability to create a warm and welcoming environment for all. She described the school as a family where students feel valued and supported.
In addition to focusing on character development, Shrevewood is also committed to environmental initiatives. Vandawalker mentioned that the school will continue its recycling efforts and launch a new program to reduce food waste in the cafeteria. The school will also expand its „Lunch Bunch“ activities, where students have the opportunity to dine with staff members and build connections outside of the classroom.
Over the summer, Shrevewood underwent significant air-conditioning repairs, resulting in the cancellation of summer programs. However, Vandawalker assured that the school will provide a more comfortable learning environment for students in the upcoming school year. The repairs will ensure that students can focus on their studies without being distracted by the heat.
Vandawalker’s journey to becoming a principal was shaped by her experiences in education. Despite initially pursuing a different career path, she eventually found her calling in teaching and educational leadership. Her background in special education has equipped her with valuable skills that she now applies to her role as principal, emphasizing the importance of good teaching for all students.
As she settles into her new role, Vandawalker looks forward to guiding Shrevewood Elementary School towards continued success and growth. With her dedication to fostering a positive and inclusive school community, she is committed to providing a supportive and enriching educational experience for all students.
