New Teen Shopping Policies Introduced by Giant Food

In an effort to combat retail theft, Giant Food is implementing new store policies at select locations, including two in Baltimore. Starting on August 22, anyone under the age of 18 will be barred from shopping after 6pm unless accompanied by an adult. The stores affected by this new rule are Store #145 located at 5150 Sinclair Ln, Baltimore, MD 21206, and Store #303 at 601 East 33rd St. Baltimore, MD 21218.

According to Giant, these specific locations have experienced „unprecedented levels of product theft that have become unsustainable for our business.“ The grocery chain is taking a proactive approach to address the issue by implementing rules similar to those in effect at area malls and shopping areas.

In addition to the age restriction policy, Giant began a pilot program in May at the two Baltimore stores, banning customers from carrying larger bags while shopping. This initiative is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to mitigate theft and ensure the safety of both associates and customers.

Retail theft not only impacts the availability of products but also creates a less convenient shopping experience for customers. More critically, it puts employees and shoppers at risk of harm. Over the past few years, there have been several violent incidents at Maryland Giant Food stores, some directly linked to theft.

In June, an employee at the Arlington Road Giant in Bethesda was assaulted for refusing to refund a man for stolen items. In November 2022, a security guard at the Oxon Hill location was killed in a shootout with a theft suspect. Another security guard at the Reisterstown Road Plaza store had to use lethal force to defend himself against an attacker in July 2021.

The impact of retail theft goes beyond individual incidents. The closure of a Giant store that had been a staple in Edmondson Village since 1998 is a testament to the financial strain caused by theft. On the other hand, the remodeling of another Giant store at Wilkens Beltway Plaza in Baltimore County shows the company’s commitment to adapting and improving in response to challenges.

Giant Food’s proactive approach to addressing retail theft through new store policies and pilot programs demonstrates a commitment to creating a safer and more secure shopping environment for both employees and customers. By implementing these measures, the grocery chain aims to reduce theft, improve product availability, and enhance the overall shopping experience for its patrons.
