New traffic safety law allows for vehicle confiscation for serious traffic offenses

The Serbian Traffic Safety Agency is taking strict measures to ensure road safety and reduce the number of traffic accidents in the country. The assistant director of the agency, Mirko Koković, recently announced that vehicles can be confiscated permanently or temporarily, even if they are borrowed. This new law aims to deter drivers from engaging in risky behavior on the roads, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or psychoactive substances.

Koković highlighted the importance of these measures in preventing accidents and saving lives. He mentioned that temporary confiscation can last for up to two years, during which the driver must pay a demurrage fee. This approach aligns with European practices and aims to have a significant impact on reducing traffic violations.

One of the key initiatives introduced by the agency is the mandatory installation of black boxes in new vehicles. Starting from July 7, all new passenger vehicles and light trucks up to 3.5 tons will be required to have a black box. This device collects data on driving behavior, such as speed, position of the gas pedal, and other relevant information. By monitoring and analyzing this data, authorities can better understand driver behavior and take appropriate actions to improve road safety.

Despite the introduction of these new measures, the number of drivers driving under the influence of alcohol has been decreasing over the years. This can be attributed to the stricter penalties imposed on offenders, including the possibility of losing their driver’s license and vehicle. Koković emphasized the importance of combining prevention and repression measures to achieve the agency’s vision of zero traffic fatalities and injuries.

Over the past decade, Serbia has seen a significant increase in the number of vehicles on the roads, while the number of casualties has decreased by 50%. This positive trend can be attributed to various factors, including improved road infrastructure, vehicle safety standards, and changes in driver behavior. The agency’s efforts in enforcing traffic regulations and detecting violations have also played a crucial role in improving road safety.

Koković highlighted some of the common traffic violations in Serbia, such as driving under the influence of alcohol, overtaking across continuous lines, and improper transportation of children. He also mentioned the importance of campaigns like „Drive Rested“ to raise awareness about the dangers of driving while fatigued. Fatigue is often underestimated as a factor in traffic accidents, and drivers are encouraged to plan their trips carefully, take breaks, and prioritize safety on the roads.

In conclusion, the Serbian Traffic Safety Agency is committed to creating a safer road environment for all users. By implementing strict measures, promoting awareness campaigns, and enforcing traffic regulations, the agency aims to reduce the number of accidents and save lives. Drivers are urged to comply with the rules, drive responsibly, and prioritize safety on the roads to prevent unnecessary tragedies.
