A recent recall of four soft drink and soda-related products distributed to New York food establishments has raised concerns over the presence of undeclared preservatives. The Charles Boggini Company, a Connecticut-based distributor of beverage flavors and concentrates, as well as water-compatible CBD nanoemulsions, voluntarily recalled three types of lemonade drinks and a flavoring base due to the undisclosed preservatives. This enforcement notice was announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, prompting consumers to be cautious about the products they consume.
The products affected by the recall are typically sold in one- and five-gallon quantities and are distributed in various states, including New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Arizona, Michigan, Illinois, and California. The recalled products and their corresponding lot/unit numbers include Pink Lemonade (lot/unit number 1-017), Yellow Lemonade (lot/unit number 1-065), Yellow Lemonade X drinks (lot/unit number 1-015), and Cola flavoring base (lot/unit numbers 9-330, 9-348, 1-013, 1-036, 1-097). These products were found to contain undeclared preservatives such as FD&C Red No. 40, FD&C Yellow No. 5, and sulfites.
FD&C Red No. 40, a red dye commonly used in food, drugs, and cosmetics, has been linked to colorectal cancer. FD&C Yellow No. 5, another food dye, is known to cause allergic reactions in some individuals. Sulfites, a type of preservative, can trigger respiratory problems in sensitive individuals. The presence of these undisclosed preservatives in the recalled products poses potential health risks to consumers, highlighting the importance of transparency in food labeling.
Companies are mandated to disclose the use of dyes, preservatives, and other chemicals in their products to ensure consumer safety. Failure to comply with these regulations can lead to product recalls and potential fines for the company. The Charles Boggini Company has refrained from providing further comments on the recall, leaving consumers and food establishments to exercise caution when purchasing and consuming these affected products.
In light of this recall, consumers are advised to check the lot/unit numbers of the products they have purchased and refrain from consuming any items that match the recalled batches. It is crucial to prioritize food safety and be vigilant about the ingredients present in the products we consume. Stay informed about product recalls and take necessary precautions to safeguard your health and well-being.
