Nigerian telecom companies disclose reasons for internet outages during hunger demonstrations

In the last 48 hours, Nigeria has experienced internet disruptions that have been attributed to cable cuts by hoodlums participating in the #EndBadGovernance protests. This revelation comes after certain organisations accused network providers, such as MTN Group Limited, of intentionally interfering with the network to limit coverage of the demonstrations.

NetBlocks, a watchdog organisation that monitors cybersecurity and internet governance, reported that a disruption to leading internet provider MTN in Nigeria could potentially limit the visibility of the nationwide protests. This news has sparked concern among a coalition of 37 organisations, including Accountability Lab Nigeria, Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), FactCheck Africa Initiative, National Roundtable on Business and Human Rights, and Paradigm Initiative.

The coalition has condemned the intentional disruption of internet access in Nigeria following the protests that erupted in several states on August 1, 2024. The disruption has raised questions about the freedom of expression and access to information during times of civil unrest.

Gbolahan Awonuga, the executive secretary of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), addressed the issue, stating that the network outage was a result of demonstrators damaging internet cables. He clarified that the disruption was not a deliberate attempt by the government to sabotage the protests but rather a consequence of the cable cuts.

Awonuga explained, „There are a lot of cable cuts across Nigeria. Some of the protesters went into the manhole and cut the cables. The network disruption is not a matter of the government trying to sabotage the protest. It is as a result of the cable cut.“ He also mentioned that efforts were being made to coordinate with the National Security Adviser to the President (NSA) to allow operators to repair the damages.

In light of these developments, Nigerians are urged to exercise patience as network providers work to restore connectivity. The situation serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining open communication channels, especially during times of social and political upheaval.

As the country navigates through these challenges, it is crucial for all stakeholders to prioritize the protection of internet infrastructure and ensure that citizens have access to reliable information. The disruptions highlight the need for dialogue and cooperation between the government, telecommunications operators, and civil society to address issues of internet freedom and connectivity in Nigeria.
