The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) recently organized a science experiment showcase for students at Laurel Magnet School. The event aimed to spark interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields among young learners and encourage them to explore the wonders of science through hands-on activities.
The NSBE’s USM chapter members, who are passionate about promoting diversity and inclusion in STEM, put together a series of engaging experiments to captivate the students‘ curiosity and foster a love for science. From creating chemical reactions to exploring the principles of physics, the demonstrations were designed to be both educational and entertaining.
One of the highlights of the showcase was a demonstration on the properties of dry ice. The students were amazed as they witnessed the sublimation process, where solid carbon dioxide transformed directly into gas without passing through the liquid phase. The NSBE members explained the science behind this phenomenon in a simple and engaging manner, making it easy for the young audience to grasp.
Another exciting experiment involved building simple electrical circuits using everyday materials like batteries, wires, and light bulbs. The students eagerly participated in assembling the circuits and were thrilled to see the bulbs light up when the connections were complete. This hands-on activity not only taught them about the flow of electricity but also instilled a sense of accomplishment in being able to create something functional.
In addition to the scientific demonstrations, the NSBE members also shared their personal journeys and experiences in pursuing careers in STEM. By sharing their stories, they hoped to inspire the students to dream big and consider a future in science or engineering. The interaction between the college students and the young learners created a positive and encouraging environment, fostering mentorship and camaraderie.
