Nyusi urges youth in Mozambique to adopt digital technologies

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has emphasized the importance of young people embracing digital technologies to create new job opportunities and enhance their quality of life. In a speech marking International Youth Day, Nyusi highlighted the irreversible nature of the digital world and its significant impact on economies and societies worldwide.

Nyusi pointed out that digital technologies play a crucial role in driving efficiency and accuracy in decision-making processes. He noted that out of the 169 targets set by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, digital technologies contribute to achieving approximately 70% of them. This underscores the vital role of digitalization in promoting development and empowering young people to drive innovation.

To support the integration of digital technologies into society, the Mozambican government has implemented various strategic and regulatory measures. These include the approval of laws such as the Electronic Transactions Law, the Information Society Policy and Strategy, the Science, Technology and Innovation Policy, and the Cyber Security Policy and Strategy. Additionally, the government has invested in technological infrastructure, connectivity, digital training, and cyber security programs to enhance access to digital services.

Nyusi highlighted specific initiatives aimed at promoting digital inclusion and innovation among young people. These include incorporating Information and Communication Technologies into education curricula, implementing the Young Creative Award to recognize entrepreneurial and innovative endeavors, and launching the VaMoz Digital Project. These projects aim to expand employment opportunities, foster creativity, and encourage active participation in the digital economy.

While acknowledging the positive impact of digital technologies, Nyusi also cautioned against the potential risks associated with their misuse. He emphasized the importance of ethical values and responsible behavior in the digital realm, particularly in combating fake news and cyber attacks. Nyusi urged young people to leverage digital literacy for positive outcomes while upholding ethical standards.

In conclusion, President Filipe Nyusi’s call for young people to embrace digital technologies reflects a commitment to harnessing the power of innovation for sustainable development. By encouraging youth participation in the digital economy and promoting responsible digital citizenship, Mozambique aims to create a future where technology serves as a catalyst for progress and prosperity.
