Ruby, SC is a small town with a big heart, and the recent passing of Mrs. Johnnie Outen Oliver has left a void in the community. Mrs. Oliver, aged 94, was a beloved figure in Ruby, known for her dedication to her family, her church, and her community. Her life story is one of resilience, hard work, and unwavering faith.
Born on May 20, 1930, in nearby Pageland, SC, Mrs. Oliver was the daughter of Clon W. and Estelle Sutton Outen. She attended Jefferson High School and later went on to establish Oliver Tax Service, a successful business that she owned and operated for over sixty years. Her work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident in everything she did, and she was respected by all who knew her.
A devout member of Ruby Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Johnnie served as an Elder and dedicated her time and talents to serving the Lord. She was also actively involved in the American Legion Auxiliary and served as Treasurer for the Ruby Cemetery Association for many years. Her contributions to these organizations were invaluable, and her presence will be sorely missed.
In her leisure time, Mrs. Oliver enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including shopping, tending to her flower gardens, and fishing. She had a kind and gentle nature that endeared her to everyone she met, and her warm smile and generous spirit will be remembered by all who knew her.
Mrs. Oliver was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Oliver, but she is survived by her three sons, Bart Smith (Caroline) Oliver, William Zinnamon “Zinny” Oliver, and Craig Wilson (Rita) Oliver. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Leslie James Hunter, Charlotte Grace Hunter, and Faith Michelle Oliver, as well as her great-grandchildren, Shiloh Gray Tweed and River Grace Tweed. Mrs. Oliver is also survived by her brother, Don S. (Viola) Outen, her sister, Carol O. Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews, including special nieces Casey Moore and Donna Curtis.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to Ruby Presbyterian Church or the Ruby Cemetery Association. These donations will honor Mrs. Oliver’s memory and continue her legacy of service and dedication to her community.
The funeral service for Mrs. Johnnie Outen Oliver will be held on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home in Chesterfield, SC. Pastor Beth H. Muse will officiate the service, and burial will follow at the Ruby Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects prior to the service, from 2:00 – 3:00 PM at the funeral home.
Mrs. Oliver’s passing is a loss for the community of Ruby, but her legacy of love, kindness, and service will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories and a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of crossing paths with her. May she rest in peace, knowing that she was truly loved and cherished by all.
