Online education in Oelwein supports rural, non-traditional students in earning high school diplomas

The Oelwein Community School District in Iowa faced a significant challenge four years ago when the COVID-19 pandemic forced them, like many others, to shift their classes and curriculum online. This transition into virtual learning was uncharted territory for most, but for Oelwein, it presented an opportunity to innovate and create something new.

Superintendent Josh Ehn saw the need for alternatives to in-person education and spearheaded the development of Oelwein Online, also known as O2. This online program offers the district’s standard curriculum, providing the same classes and credentials as traditional schooling. What sets O2 apart is that it is not limited to Oelwein students; any Iowa resident can enroll, making education more accessible to a wider audience.

Principal Connie Adams emphasizes that O2 serves as a lifeline for students who may struggle in or lack access to a traditional school setting. This includes individuals with anxiety, young parents, former drop-outs, and those with frequent medical issues. By offering flexibility and personalized support, O2 ensures that all students have the opportunity to graduate on time and succeed academically.

One common criticism of online schooling is the lack of social and interpersonal skills that students develop through in-person interactions. However, Adams and her team have addressed this concern by incorporating designated social hours and organizing field trips to promote socialization among O2 students. Additionally, the school has its own physical building where students can receive extra help or find a quiet space to work, bridging the gap between virtual and physical learning environments.

Jill Shannon, a parent of an O2 student, attests to the positive impact the program has had on her daughter’s academic journey. From being frequently absent to becoming a straight-A student, Shannon credits O2 for providing a supportive and adaptable learning environment. Through social Zooms and opportunities to make friends, her daughter has found success in a multitude of ways, showcasing the effectiveness of alternative educational approaches.

In conclusion, Oelwein Online has proven to be a valuable resource for students seeking a non-traditional educational experience. By offering a comprehensive curriculum, personalized support, and opportunities for social interaction, O2 has successfully adapted to the changing landscape of education. As the program continues to evolve and grow, it serves as a testament to the district’s commitment to providing quality education for all students, regardless of their circumstances.
