Playing Two Pokemon Games Simultaneously with Four Controllers, Voice Controls, and a Foot Pedal: The Most Complex Speedrun Ever

Speedrunners are known for their incredible gaming skills, but one particular speedrun has left gamers in awe – the Pokemon Red and Green catch ‚em all challenge. This challenge involves playing two games simultaneously to obtain all 150 Pokemon required for the complete Pokedex diploma, without using glitches. Japanese speedrunner Zunow took on this daunting task at RTA in Japan Summer 2024, showcasing his dedication to this challenge that he has been focusing on since 2022.

Unlike traditional speedruns that aim to reach the end credits of a game, the catch ‚em all challenge requires Zunow to play both Pokemon Red and Green simultaneously. This is necessary due to trade evolutions and version exclusives that make it impossible to catch all Pokemon in one game. Zunow’s method of streamlining this operation is truly mind-boggling. He uses a unique setup where he wields two Super Nintendo Entertainment System controllers strapped back to back in each hand. This allows him to control the D-pads with his thumbs and press buttons with his fingers on the opposite side, showcasing his exceptional multitasking abilities.

In addition to his intricate controller setup, Zunow also utilizes voice controls to update a spreadsheet with every Pokemon he catches. He even has a foot pedal to keep track of both games‘ RNG, showcasing his meticulous attention to detail. Watching Zunow speed through battles on one game while simultaneously managing a completely different task on the other is a dizzying experience, highlighting his exceptional focus and skill.

Zunow’s dedication to the catch ‚em all challenge paid off with his best-ever time of five hours, 15 minutes, and 27 seconds. Although he wasn’t able to beat this record during his recent stream at RTA in Japan, where he completed the challenge in five hours, 30 minutes, and 14 seconds, his skills are undeniable. The level of precision and concentration required to pull off such a feat is truly impressive, making it a challenge that few would dare to attempt.

The Pokemon Red and Green catch ‚em all challenge is a testament to the dedication and talent of speedrunners like Zunow. His ability to masterfully navigate two games simultaneously, all while maintaining a high level of performance, is a true testament to his gaming prowess. It’s a challenge that showcases the incredible skill and determination of speedrunners, leaving gamers in awe of their abilities.
