In a recent string of car thefts in Portland, Oregon, car experts and law enforcement officials are warning residents about the increasing sophistication of car thieves. The theft of high-end vehicles like Corvettes, Camaros, and Chargers has become a growing concern, with criminals using advanced technology and firearms to carry out their illegal activities.
Leo Kozyarsky, Lucas Nicacio, and the team at Diplomat Motors were caught off guard when a Corvette was stolen from their lot. Kozyarsky mentioned, “These newer model General Motor cars are not known for that, so we were definitely caught off guard, especially a Corvette, those are hard to steal.” This incident served as a wake-up call for the team, prompting them to enhance their security measures by moving to a newer location with improved lighting, fences, and security systems.
According to Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Cody Linderholm, 21-year-old Aric Wade Adams of Central Point orchestrated a series of armed car robberies involving sophisticated technology. These incidents, which spanned multiple states, involved the theft of muscle cars using advanced methods that law enforcement had not previously encountered in Portland. Adams was arrested near Medford and has been indicted on 16 counts, including possession of a stolen vehicle, theft, and robbery with a firearm.
Linderholm emphasized the seriousness of these crimes, stating, “The technology they’re using to steal these vehicles is something we haven’t seen in Portland yet. This isn’t someone breaking into your home or the KIA boys, TikTok challenge. This is much more advanced and scarier especially because they showed up with firearms.” The arrest of Adams was a significant victory for law enforcement, but Linderholm cautioned that the fight against car theft rings may not be over.
The Portland City Council has expressed their commitment to cracking down on car thefts and ensuring the safety of residents. Linderholm added, “I think what’s really shocking is someone coming from outside our community from Southern Oregon to commit thefts, and we’re not going to tolerate that. Especially with firearms or anything like that. He came from almost out of state at the California border.”
In light of these incidents, experts and officials are urging residents to take proactive measures to protect their vehicles. Nicacio advised, “At the end of the day if you have a group that’s organized and skilled they’re going to be good at what they do.
