Preventing Blood Clots with Air-Powered Computers

A recent breakthrough in the field of medical device monitoring has introduced a new air-powered computer that can help prevent blood clots and strokes by detecting failures in compression machines. The device in question operates on compressed air and utilizes pneumatic logic to issue warnings when it identifies issues with the intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) devices it is designed to monitor. IPC devices are essential in preventing blood clots by periodically squeezing a person’s legs to improve blood flow. Traditionally, these machines rely on electronics for power and monitoring, making them expensive to produce and maintain.

William Grover, an associate professor of bioengineering at UC Riverside and the corresponding author of the paper, explains the motivation behind developing a pneumatic device to enhance the safety and affordability of IPC machines. By leveraging the principles of pneumatics, which involve the transmission of compressed air to control mechanical systems, Grover and his team aimed to eliminate some of the electronics in these devices while maintaining their effectiveness.

The air-powered computer functions similarly to electronic circuits by performing parity bit calculations. Parity bits are used to ensure the accuracy of transmitted data by adding an extra piece of information that indicates whether the message contains an odd or even number of bits. In this case, the air-powered computer uses differences in air pressure flowing through tiny valves to count ones and zeroes, triggering an alarm if an error is detected.

The compact size of the device, comparable to a box of matches, allows it to replace multiple sensors and a computer, reducing costs while enhancing the detection capabilities of the IPC machines. Moreover, its reliance on pneumatic logic makes it suitable for use in high humidity or high-temperature environments where electronics may not be ideal.

Beyond medical applications, air-powered computing holds promise for addressing safety challenges in other industries. Grover envisions developing a pneumatic robot to replace humans in hazardous tasks such as moving grain in tall silos, where the risk of entrapment and explosions poses significant dangers. By eliminating the need for electronic components that could spark explosions, an air-powered robot could enhance safety in such environments.
