Puspakom granted license to offer motor vehicle inspection services under updated system

PUTRAJAYA: The Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) has made history by becoming the first company authorized to carry out motor vehicle inspections under the new mechanism of the Road Transport Act (Act 333). This development marks a significant shift in the industry, as Puspakom will no longer be the sole provider of periodic motor vehicle inspection services.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that Puspakom will now be able to provide motor vehicle inspection services at designated inspection centers and through mobile inspection services nationwide. This move is in line with Section 126 (1) of Act 333, which allows for competition among industry players in providing these essential services.

Loke emphasized the government’s commitment to creating a competitive service environment and making it easier for the public to fulfill their vehicle inspection requirements. By opening up the market to other qualified companies, the aim is to improve efficiency and quality in the provision of motor vehicle inspection services.

The response from industry players to provide motor vehicle inspection services under Act 333 has been positive, with nearly 50 companies expressing interest in offering these services. Two companies have already submitted their official applications to obtain a license as a motor vehicle inspection service provider.

The Ministry of Transport will evaluate all applications and announce the successful applicants soon. Loke assured that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will continue to regulate and monitor the provision of services to ensure compliance with standards and regulations, as well as the delivery of quality services to customers.

Interested parties can obtain guidelines on how to apply for a license to provide motor vehicle inspection services from the Ministry of Transport’s website. The closing date for applications is October 31, providing ample time for companies to prepare and submit their proposals.

Overall, the decision to allow multiple companies to provide motor vehicle inspection services signifies a positive step towards enhancing competition, efficiency, and customer satisfaction in the industry. With Puspakom leading the way as the first authorized company, the future of motor vehicle inspections in Malaysia looks promising.
