Removing Suncream and Chlorine Stains from Clothes Post-Holiday

Summer holidays are a time for relaxation, fun, and making memories. However, one aspect of vacationing that can put a damper on the experience is the toll it takes on our clothes. From suncream stains to chlorine damage, our wardrobe can suffer from the effects of our summer adventures. But fear not, there are simple and effective ways to protect and restore your clothing so you can enjoy your holiday worry-free.

Suncream is a staple item in our beach bags, but it can also be a major culprit for staining our clothes. The oil-based formulas and UV filters in suncream can leave yellowish marks on fabrics, causing frustration for many travelers. Laura Mountford, a cleaning content creator, recommends using water-based sunscreens and allowing the product to absorb into your skin before getting dressed to prevent stains. If you do get suncream on your clothes, pre-treating the affected area with laundry detergent and washing in cool water can help remove the stains.

For those stubborn suncream stains, natural products like white vinegar, lemon juice, eucalyptus oil, and baking soda can be effective in lifting the marks from your clothes. These household items are gentle on fabrics and can help restore your garments to their original condition. It’s important to act fast when dealing with stains and avoid using bleach, as it can react with the suncream and make the situation worse.

Chlorine from pools can also wreak havoc on swimwear, turning white fabrics a greenish hue. To protect your swimwear, rinse it daily with cold water, avoid wringing or hanging it to dry, and wash it in a mesh laundry bag on a delicate cycle when you return home. If your swimwear smells of chlorine, soaking it in cold water with white vinegar before washing can help eliminate the odor.

When drying your clothes outdoors, be mindful of the sun’s bleaching effects on fabrics. While outdoor drying is great for whites, it’s best to dry stained fabrics, brights, or darks in a shady spot to prevent sun bleaching. By following these tips and tricks, you can protect your holiday wardrobe from suncream and chlorine damage, ensuring your clothes stay looking fresh and vibrant throughout your summer adventures.
