Report: Las Vegas police considering protesting working Raiders games due to NFL’s new protocols

The National Football League (NFL) is facing pushback from the Las Vegas Police Department over new security measures that are causing concern among law enforcement officials. The Las Vegas Police Department has threatened to boycott working Raiders games if the NFL’s new measures are implemented.

According to Las Vegas Police protective association president Steve Grammas, the NFL’s new security measures involve collecting officers‘ biometric data, specifically their facial recognition information. This data would then be shared with the NFL’s „family partners“ for potential use. Grammas expressed worry over the potential exposure of officers‘ biometric data to unknown parties and individuals with differing agendas.

Initially, the NFL had officers sign an agreement absolving the league of liability in case of any incidents during games. However, this policy was later removed, leaving officers uneasy about the implications of the new security measures. Grammas highlighted the potential risks of having officers‘ biometric data in the hands of unknown entities, especially those who may not support law enforcement.

Grammas emphasized the importance of maintaining officers‘ privacy and security while carrying out their duties at NFL games. He proposed reverting to the previous method of providing officers with physical credentials, such as wristbands, instead of collecting biometric data. Despite these concerns, the NFL stated that the new credentialing system would enhance security at stadiums and that they are open to addressing any questions or concerns raised by stakeholders.

The policy was set to be implemented during the preseason, with the Raiders scheduled to play their first regular season home game in Week 3 against the Carolina Panthers at Allegiant Stadium. The stadium, which hosted Super Bowl LVIII in February, will also host a special event called the „Day of Gratitude,“ where 15,000 veterans and their families will be in attendance.

In conclusion, the clash between the NFL and the Las Vegas Police Department highlights the importance of balancing security measures with privacy concerns. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how both parties will address the issues raised and come to a resolution that ensures the safety and privacy of all involved.
