Safaricom urges government to remove Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet from Kenya

Telecommunications giant Safaricom has recently raised concerns with the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) regarding the entry of satellite internet providers into the Kenyan market. In a letter addressed to the CA, Safaricom has specifically targeted Elon Musk’s Starlink, urging the government to reconsider the licenses granted to independent satellite providers.

Safaricom’s main argument revolves around the potential risks associated with allowing satellite internet providers like Starlink to operate independently in Kenya. The company has expressed fears that the presence of these providers could lead to illegal connections and harmful interference to existing mobile networks, ultimately compromising the quality of mobile network services in the country.

In their letter to the Communications Authority, Safaricom has proposed that satellite internet providers be required to partner with existing internet service providers in Kenya, such as Safaricom, Jamii Telecommunications Limited, and Zuku, rather than setting up their services as standalone operations. This, according to Safaricom, would ensure better coordination and management of services, minimizing the risk of interference with mobile networks.

Safaricom’s Chief Executive Officer, Peter Ndegwa, has emphasized the importance of careful assessment of the potential risks associated with granting independent licenses to satellite service providers. The company argues that satellite providers should operate as infrastructure providers, while the operating license should remain with the existing mobile network operators in the country.

The concerns raised by Safaricom highlight the complex dynamics of the telecommunications industry and the challenges that arise with the introduction of new technologies and players in the market. As the demand for high-speed internet connectivity continues to grow, it is essential for regulators and industry players to work together to ensure the smooth integration of new services while safeguarding the quality and reliability of existing networks.

In conclusion, Safaricom’s letter to the Communications Authority underscores the need for careful consideration and strategic planning in the regulation of satellite internet providers in Kenya. By advocating for closer collaboration between satellite providers and existing internet service operators, Safaricom aims to protect the interests of consumers and maintain the integrity of the country’s telecommunications infrastructure. It remains to be seen how the government will respond to these concerns and what measures will be put in place to address the challenges raised by Safaricom.
