Sandpipers, South Bay’s largest philanthropic organization, recently hosted its annual Back-to-School Shopping event at Kohl’s in Torrance on August 11. This event, which has been held since 1999, aims to benefit over 75 underprivileged youth in the South Bay area. Each child is referred by one of twelve local nonprofit partner agencies of Sandpipers and is then paired with a member of the organization to assist them in selecting school clothes, shoes, uniforms, and supplies valued at $250-$350 per child. In addition to these items, Sandpipers also donates backpacks loaded with school supplies for each student.
Kohl’s plays a crucial role in supporting this program by opening its doors before normal business hours, providing staffing for the event, and offering a 20 percent discount on Sandpipers’ purchases with no sales tax. This partnership allows Sandpipers to maximize the impact of their donations and provide a meaningful shopping experience for the children.
Dayna Bubenicek, the president of Sandpipers for the 2024-25 term, emphasized the importance of the Back-to-School Shopping event in empowering underprivileged children. As a school teacher herself, Bubenicek understands the significance of having clothes that reflect a child’s interests, individuality, and identity. Through collaborations with Kohl’s and generous community donors, Sandpipers’ Back-to-School Shopping program helps boost the confidence of deserving children who may have never received brand-new shoes or clothing before.
Bubenicek further highlighted that the Back-to-School Shopping event is a favorite among Sandpipers’ membership because it allows them to witness the direct impact they are making on children in the community. Seeing the smiles on the children’s faces as they pick out their new school supplies and outfits is a rewarding experience for all involved.
