Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya Scindia, recently conducted a second round of consultative meetings with the Stakeholders Advisory Committees (SACs) to discuss the implementation of new rules under the New Telecom Act. The focus of the meeting was on addressing various issues, including the right of way (RoW), to ensure seamless adoption and facilitation for a digitally connected India. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) highlighted the importance of engaging industry leaders in shaping the future of India’s telecommunication ecosystem.
During the meeting, the SACs shared their inputs from previous discussions, with the Committee on Satellite Communication focusing on the Indian space policy, allocation of satellite spectrum, and spectrum usage charge (SUC). The Advisory Committee on Satellite Communication emphasized the need for measures to advance India’s position as a global hub for satellite communication. They commended the Ministry for incorporating key provisions in the New Telecom Act, which are aimed at modernizing India’s telecommunications framework and promoting more flexible and technologically neutral spectrum utilization.
On the other hand, the Advisory Committee on Internet Service Providers & Infrastructure Providers acknowledged the progress made in RoW processes but stressed the ongoing need for integrated governance and enhanced cooperation from State governments and local municipal bodies. Minister Scindia encouraged industry stakeholders to actively participate by providing feedback on the RoW rules, emphasizing the Ministry’s commitment to fostering a consistent two-way dialogue with the government on telecommunications sector matters.
In a bid to gather diverse perspectives and insights, Scindia recently constituted six distinct SACs comprising top CEOs, academicians, researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry thought leaders. These committees are instrumental in providing valuable inputs to the DoT on various matters related to the telecommunications sector. The Minister’s proactive approach in engaging with industry stakeholders reflects a commitment to fostering collaboration and driving innovation in the sector.
In a previous meeting with the telecom SAC, attended by prominent industry leaders such as Reliance Jio Chairman Akash Ambani, Bharti Airtel Founder and Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal, and Vodafone-Idea Managing Director Akshaya Moondra, Scindia reiterated the importance of industry participation in shaping the future of India’s telecommunications landscape. The discussions held during these meetings are crucial in charting a course for the sector’s growth and development.
Overall, Minister Scindia’s efforts to engage with industry stakeholders through SAC meetings demonstrate a proactive approach towards addressing key issues and driving innovation in the telecommunications sector. The collaborative efforts between the government and industry leaders are essential in shaping a robust and future-ready telecommunications ecosystem for India.
