Fast fashion brands like Shein and Temu have come under fire after South Korean health authorities discovered toxic substances in some of their products. According to reports, shoes from these brands contained levels of toxic substances that were hundreds of times higher than legally permitted. This revelation has raised concerns about the safety and quality of products being sold by these popular online retailers.
In a recent test conducted by Seoul’s authorities on 144 products, it was found that numerous items from Shein, AliExpress, and Temu failed to meet safety guidelines. One of the most alarming findings was the presence of large quantities of phthalates in some pairs of Shein shoes. Phthalates are chemical compounds that make plastics more flexible, but they can have harmful effects on human health. One particular pair of Shein shoes was found to have 229 times the legal limit for phthalates, posing serious risks to consumers.
According to an official from Seoul’s environmental health team, phthalate-based plasticizers can impact reproductive functions, leading to issues such as reduced sperm count, infertility, and even premature birth. This highlights the importance of ensuring that products meet safety standards and regulations to protect consumers from potential health hazards.
In addition to Shein, products from Temu were also found to contain higher-than-permissible levels of toxic substances. Sandal insoles sold by Temu were found to have 11 times more lead than legally allowed, further raising concerns about the safety of products being sold by these fast fashion brands. In response to these findings, a spokesperson for Temu stated that they have launched an internal investigation and have removed the affected products from their marketplace.
This is not the first time that Shein’s products have been flagged for containing toxic substances in South Korea. In a previous investigation in May, officials found a pair of Shein shoes with 428 times the permitted levels of phthalates. The repeated instances of non-compliance with safety regulations highlight the need for stricter oversight and regulation in the fast fashion industry to protect consumers from potential harm.
Despite these controversies, Shein and Temu continue to be popular among consumers, especially in the US. Shein, in particular, has seen tremendous growth and is now one of the biggest players in the fast fashion market. With a valuation of $100 billion at its peak in 2022, Shein is gearing up to go public, further solidifying its position in the industry.
As consumers become more conscious of the environmental and health impacts of fast fashion, it is essential for brands like Shein and Temu to prioritize safety and quality in their products. By adhering to safety standards and regulations, these brands can build trust with consumers and ensure that their products are not only trendy and affordable but also safe to use.
