SpaceX wants to increase the throughput of Starlink satellites.

In recent developments, there have been significant changes in the parameters of satellite flights, specifically regarding the orbit height and elevation angle, as well as the frequencies used for data transmission. These changes aim to enable satellites to provide broadband services, such as gigabit internet access, and offer very low latency when transmitting packets. The Starlink satellites currently orbiting the Earth theoretically allow data download speeds ranging from 25 to 220 Mb/s, with most cases hovering around 100 Mb/s. With the upcoming changes, these values could potentially increase by up to ten times, reaching speeds of up to 1 Gb/s for packet downloads.

It is worth noting that in 2022, the FCC granted SpaceX permission to deploy 7,500 Starlink Gen2 satellites that transmit data using Ku and Ka bands, with plans to add E and V bands. To date, SpaceX has deployed over 3,000 such satellites, serving approximately 4 million users. SpaceX is now seeking approval to utilize additional frequency ranges offered by all the aforementioned bands (Ku, Ka, V, and E), using them to provide both fixed satellite services (FSS) and mobile satellite services (MSS).

Furthermore, SpaceX is seeking permission to lower the orbit heights at which satellites orbit the Earth by an average of around 10%, arguing that this will significantly reduce packet transmission delays. This reduction in latency is crucial for online services, such as streaming data transmissions. The company is also requesting a change in the minimum elevation angle from 25 degrees to 20 degrees.

These proposed changes in satellite flight parameters and frequency usage are poised to revolutionize the way satellite internet services are delivered. By increasing data transmission speeds and reducing latency, users can expect a significant improvement in their online experiences. With SpaceX’s ambitious plans for expanding the Starlink constellation and optimizing satellite operations, the future of satellite internet looks promising for millions of users worldwide.
